Team Coasters

Created from clay, these coasters are engraved with the images of Bryant Denny and Jordan-Hare Stadiums. These coasters absorb moisture superbly and are made to last. The felt bottoms provide a smooth protective surface. You'll love them for tailgating or year round.

School pride

You wouldn’t believe Cindy’s barn. She’s a petite, unassuming woman but in her barn in Green Pond, Alabama, she has a full scale welding and plasma cutting business. Some of her smallest metal designs are these ultra-cool elephant and tiger necklaces. Presented on a black cord, the elephant is approximately 3.5 inches across while the tiger is approximately 2.5 inches across.

Football season begins!!

These charming coasters are made from carpet to be extra absorbent. Low pile means that glasses rest level and won’t tip over. They are cut from new carpet tiles so no set is exactly the same. Set of 4, each is approximately 6 inches across. From Helena, Alabama.

Farm to Table, a Growing Trend

Birmingham’s largest farm-to-table program is Grow Alabama. The idea has been a practice among select upscale restaurants for several years. The movement is now gaining popularity among quality conscious home cooks. The idea is to use ingredients grown or raised as close to home as possible. For foodies, the appeal is that local in-season food has superior taste. For the health conscious, food that is consumed shortly after harvesting has more nutritional value. For the environmentally conscious, local food has to travel fewer miles to get where it is going, so less fossil fuel is used. The economically conscious appreciate the fact that dollars spent support local farmers.

Alabama Goods is pleased to support the farm-to-table movement.  Our Homewood store serves as a pick-up location for Grow Alabama, an organization that supports Alabama farmers and provides Grow Alabama customers with fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables that are in season.

NBC13 Features Alabama Goods

Alabama Goods was recently featured on NBC13's Daytime Alabama. David Lamb, the show's co-host, interviewed Sherry at our store in Homewood. 6 months and counting.........

Even though today is the farthest day from the Christmas holiday (it's half way between last Christmas and the upcoming holiday),  plans are underway at Alabama Goods.  We're working on creative designs and distinctive gifts to make your holiday gift giving effortless.  When you are looking for "WOW", you can find it at Alabama Goods.

In addition to gift baskets, we love putting on our creative hats and coming up with other fun gift ideas.  Combining pottery with food is always a hit and we have many options, for starters: soup mug and bean soup, breakfast bowl and rolled oats, cornbread baker and cornmeal.  Or maybe a wooden pen with handcrafted note cards.  How about a Gees Bend poetry book and a quilted pot holder?

Merry Christmas y'all -  now pass the sweet tea.

Alabama Pottery

What makes pottery so appealing?  Why are we attracted to it like moths to a flame?  Because it's only natural.  The things of nature bring us pleasure.   Just as we love to experience the ocean, lakes and rivers, mountains, and the forests, we are drawn to the organic components of pottery. A pottery vessel is made of clay and the glazed coating is made from various elements including sand, sodium, potassium, and calcium.   Functional pottery introduces a natural element into the kitchen.  It turns ordinary food into comfort food.  In addition, pottery is simply beautiful.

At Alabama Goods, we have a wide selection of kitchen pottery from various potters across the state:

  • Ann Beaird (Oneonta)
  • Janice Entler (Cropwell)
  • Valerie Holley (Homewood)
  • Carolyn Ingram (Birmingham)
  • Bryan Jordan (Hoover)
  • Laura Jordan (Hoover
  • Lynne Killion (Birmingham)
  • Marilyn Moncus (Birmingham)
  • Chad and Megan Nelson (Cullman)
  • Michael O'Shell (Pelham)
  • Dan and Laurel Pfeiffer. (Elkmont)

In addition to dinnerware, casserole dishes, coffee mugs, bowls, and trays, we carry some unique pieces: garlic zester, garlic keeper, butter keeper, cornbread baker, chicken cooker, berry bowl, prep bowl, dip chiller, bacon cooker, egg separator, bread bowl, and pie spy.  You can view pottery on our website or visit our store to see an even larger selection.  You'll see how functional, and beautiful, kitchen pottery can be.

Fabulous Furniture

When searching for furniture, it's a challenge to find all wood pieces.  We're pleased to have furniture made by Alabama furniture crafters, John Brannon and Matt and Cynthia Mobley. They each make tables, benches and home accessories from real wood. These crafters use wood with a past life, such as a barn, to re-purpose it in to furniture. Alabama made furniture is a warm and rich accent in any home. Come choose your favorite today.

Good for body, soul and the earth

Becoming more informed about our impact on the environment is a worthy pursuit. Here’s a little nugget of information. Did you know that paraffin candles contain petroleum? When burned they release soot and the following carcinogenic toxins: acetaldehyde, acrolein, benzene, and formaldehyde. They create poor indoor air quality and have been known to cause, headaches, skin irritations, and asthma-like conditions. Soy Lyon candles, on the other hand, are made with natural soy beans, which creates a non-toxic biodegradable wax. Be good to the earth and body – go soy!

Winnie the Pooh's BFF

One of the local potters, Lynne Killion, just made a honey pot for us. We love it! It's the perfect companion to the locally collected honey sold at the store. Of course she thought to include the essential wooden dipper.

We've Got Local Honey, Honey

You may have seen the Fox6 news story that aired on March 23rd about the benefits of local honey.  If not, here's the scoop.  A member of the Fox6 marketing staff takes a spoonful of honey each morning and has been able to stop taking allergy medicine.  He starts around March 1st each year.

As the news story explained, since bees pick up pollen as they fly around, it naturally gets passed into honey and those who eat it are exposed to low amounts of the allergens.  To fight allergies, however, it is important to eat locally produced honey, which contains local pollens.

Dr. James McMinn, a wellness doctor in Birmingham, said research shows that a dose of honey is similar to getting a flu shot.  Given a small dose of honey, the body is exposed to a low amount of the allergens. The immunity builds up over time so that when bushes, trees, and flowers bloom, the body is ready for it. For some, this is a natural, inexpensive way to stay healthy.

The honey featured in the story, Pure Alabama Honey, is sold at our retail store.  We have 8 oz, 12 oz., 1 lb., and 2 lb. jars.

Look for the banner

The banner is up.  We're in business y'all!  The store has been open for two weeks and we've received such a heartwarming reception.  Some people were unfamiliar with Alabama Goods and simply walked in when seeing our banner, others read about the store on our website, blog, or facebook.  Others sought us out because they were our customers when we were in the Pepper Place area.  Everyone had one thing in common; they loved the store!  If you haven't visited us yet, please drop in.  We have a lot of distinctive food and gifts made in Alabama to show you.

Updates in Store

It’s amazing what some clean up and paint can do. The outside is beginning to take shape. We are still working on outside signage but I love the new look. We’ll be hanging some interesting pieces outside so there’s more to come.

The store is closed, but not for long!

Sometimes, what may appear to be bad news is really a segway to something better.   AlabamaGoods experienced that recently.  Up until the last week in December, we had been leasing space in The General Store at the Pepper Place.  We loved having a retail destination where people could shop for their favorite Alabama made items.  When we received the news that The General Store was closing, we knew we had to find another retail home quickly.  We wanted a location in a quaint, established area that attracted shoppers who would appreciate the handcrafted products we sell.  We found the perfect spot!  If you've shopped in Birmingham, you're probably familiar with 18th Street in Homewood.  We think it is the most interesting shopping destination in Birmingham.   Our new retail home is in the strip where At Home and Harmony Landing are located.  There is a lot of work to do to the space.  Over the next several days and weeks, we will be working hard to transform the spot.  We'll show pictures of our progress and the fun we're having getting the store ready.

This is how the store front looks today.

New Year Eve Style

Choosing the right accessory can transform an outfit go from blah to red-carpet ready.  Toting an Ann Garwick creation will reflect your attention to detail and appreciation for good design.  It’s the laborious process behind Ann’s creations that makes her bags stand out.  She uses 100% wool yarn to knit or crochet each piece.  After soaking the piece in hot water and a special soap, the material becomes tight and dense.  She selects the perfect embellishments and hand stitches each one on the purse.  One bag takes three to four days to make.  When people compliment you on your good taste, and they will, you can tell them you are carrying an Ann Garwick original.  You can find Ann’s bag at our location at Alabama Goods.

Pure Alabama Honey

Did you know
that the average grocery store honey contains honey from other countries?  It may be bottled in the U.S., but the honey is collected from great distances, such as China, and shipped here.

The nectar source for Pure Alabama Honey bees come from “wild flowers”, which includes a cross section of blooms: dandelion, clover, tulip poplar, holly, blackberry, mimosas, sumac, privet, and more.   Basically what we find growing in most of the state.  Pure Alabama Honey is raw and strained (as opposed to microscopically filtered), which means it still maintains the pollen granules that are so beneficial.  In comparison, pasteurized honey has been heated to a high temperature, thus killing the vitamins, minerals, and enzymes.  You’ll find Pure Alabama Honey at Alabama Goods.

Alabama Made Soap
